Brooks County - Quitman GA

Created December 11, 1858 with 492 miles taken from Lowndes and Thomas Counties. Named in Honor of Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1857).
In May 1869, Judge James L. Beaty, Ordinary of Brooks County, directed the county Treasurer to issue $2070.00 in county scrip in denominations
of one, two and five dollars. In August 1868 the treasury was $3500 in debt. By 1869 when the scrip was issued it had doubled. On March 14, 1871
 A. P. Perham, County Treasurer was authorized to issue $1900 in scrip and on May 11th was directed to issue an additional $850. The records show
that by January 1st 1874 all the county scrip had been redeemed.
